    Great Reel!

I bought the my Squall 400 last year and it works great. I’ve caught many nice fish on it and it handles them perfectly. I caught a 14lb yellowtail, 15 pound halibut, and a 12lb halibut on this reel along with many other fish. It flylines sardines very well and can bomb cast surface irons and other lures. It has become my favorite reel in my arsenal!

    I couldn’t ask for more

This Penn Squall cast great! It has loads of power and great drag range. I have used it in both fresh and saltwater, for both plug casting and vertical slow pitch jigging. I have been very happy with this addition to my fishing tackle.

    Side plate falls off

This is a great reel, it’s smooth, the magnetic cast control is great, but I can only give it three stars because of the side plate release location. The first time I used this reel, I placed it in a rod holder. When I retrieved it to fish some more, the side plate fell off in the water, making the real useless. I have to wonder what the heck the engineer was thinking when they put the release for the side plate on the rear of the reel where it can get released by placing it in a rod holder. If this engineer had any real experience of fishing, they would know not to put the release on the back of the reel because rods and reels go into rod holders! Thanks a lot for costing me $220 for 15 minutes of fishing! I definitely would not recommend this reel to anyone.

Thank you for taking the time to share your detailed feedback. We’re glad to hear you enjoyed the reel’s smooth performance and magnetic cast control, but we’re very sorry to hear about what happened with the side plate.

We understand how frustrating it would be to lose the side plate and have the reel become unusable, especially on the first use. Your feedback regarding the side plate release location and how it interacts with rod holders is important, and we’ll be sure to pass your comments along to our product team for review.

The reel is also covered by a 1-year warranty. Please reach out to our Customer Service team so we can review the issue with you and determine the best way to assist.
