Damaged on Arrival – Poor Packaging

I ordered a Penn rod directly, and it arrived completely damaged and unusable. The rod has a noticeable crack right out of the box, and in the most critical part of the rod. It was shipped with zero protective padding or bubble wrap to prevent it from shifting or taking impacts during transit. However I would guess the crack was there before shipping based on it being the middle part of the rod that is cracked, which makes me wonder what kind of quality control they have for these things...

For a high-quality fishing rod, you expect the manufacturer to take basic precautions when shipping. Extremely disappointed in the quality control and packaging standards here. I have reached out to customer service to return this, but I won't be ordering from Penn again...

    Good rod

I had to replace my old rods used for Striper bank/surf fishing 2 years ago. I got this rod paired with a PENN Battle III 6000 HS and a KastKing KONG rod (Same specs, same reel). I clean my rods after every use. I use 40' braid to a 30lb Floracarbon leader. From last spring to the start of summer I caught over 50 Stripers. Many were 40" to 50" but most were in the mid to high 30" range. The previous year I caught approximately the same.

This Prevail has performed very well throughout its current lifecycle. It has performed just as well as the KONG. However, I noticed that the top eyelet on the prevail has obtained sharp gouges in it. I think this can be attributed to line stress on the eyelet from catching heavy fish. The KONG has no visable wear in the top eyelet and it has experienced the same catch load. I had to file the top eyelet down on the Prevail in order to ensure my line isn't cut from the gouges. I imagine I have the rest of this season to fish before needing to replace that eyelet. It must be made of a soft material. I did notice what looked like copper under the stainless steel finish when inspecting at the gouges and filing down the sharp ridges. Just be advised to check your line and eyelets after catching heavier fish.

Thank you for the detailed feedback and for sharing your experience with the PENN Prevail. It’s great to hear the rod has handled so many impressive Stripers, including fish in the 40–50" range.

We’re sorry to hear about the wear on the top guide. Your comments about the guide material and the gouging are very helpful, and we’ll be sure to pass this feedback along to our product team for review. We also appreciate the reminder to regularly inspect guides and line after landing larger fish.

Thank you for choosing PENN and for taking the time to share your experience!

    No tip and no service

The rod itself actually seems solid, but the moment I took it out onto the beach straight out of the box, the rod tip just slid off and i to the water. I tried to email support to see if anything could be done, but haven't gotten a response in about a month now

We’re sorry to hear about the issue with your rod tip and the delay in receiving a response from our support team. We understand how frustrating that must be, especially with a brand-new rod.

We see you have received a response, and a replacement was sent out to you under warranty. Thank you for your patience!

    Fantastic Rod!

I got the 9ft medium mod fast and its great with my battle IV 4000! Great distance, feel, and comfort while casting paddle tail swimbaits and plugs. Heck I caught a nice 34in Striped bass on my second outing with this rod!

    Versatile rod at good value

Used an 8' Prevail III rod paired with a Fierce 6000 reel for roosterfish in Baja Sur. Performed great - from both shore and boat - and was at a reasonable enough cost to where we aren't worried about it if it gets damaged or lost while traveling.
