Parts and Servicing

Penn reels are world- renowned for being just about bombproof, but even our reels need a little TLC occasionally.

If you buy top class gear regular servicing is an investment rather than an outlay. Conversant with innovation, Penn also employs a policy of designing models to maximise continuity of parts supply. We do not change products solely for the sake of change. Whether you have the very latest model or one 10 or even 20 years old you can feel safe in the knowledge that parts will almost certainly be available to bring your pride an joyback to full working order. Reels can and on occasions do turn up as a box of bits, a DIY attempt gone drastically wrong, or so neglected as to be seized solid. We will do our best to sort it out for you.

Monofilament line does absorb water and salt water is very corrosive. Rinse the spool under a gentle stream of luke warm freshwater to flush out as much of the salt as possible. If your are not going to use the reel for a while, it’s good idea to run the line off through a kitchen towel onto another reel until the line coming off the reel is dry. Then wind back on under medium, constant tension. Salt will make the line brittle and reduce breaking strain considerably.

To make sure your reel enjoys a long and fruitful life always wipe it down with a damp cloth after use. Then a brisk rub with a towel and finally treat it to a little TLC by giving it an invigorating wipe over with a cloth containing a little WD-40. Never spray WD-40 directly into the insides of your reel, especially around bearings or gears. WD-40 will emulsify oil and grease, which will leave your gears open to excessive wear, and your bearings swimming in gnats pee rather than the weight of oil you originally installed. A sure fire way to an instant crack off!

If you are storing a reel for some time it is a good idea to keep medium tension on the drag washers but not excessive. This will prevent any contaminants getting in to the washers.

Also, put the reel into free spool to help prevent the pinion gear sticking to the shaft.
