Rated 5 out of 5 by In the surf from Solid product at a decent price Though not sealed it is easy to service and maintain. Built like a tank to be handed down for generations. I have landed thousands of pounds of stripers on mine without issue. It can be reeled underwater as I need my reels to do, swimming out to a rock, using my rod as a staff with the reel submerged still no issues. Just tear down, clean and reliable. Dependability is a word that suits this reel, whether talking about the drag or overall performance. Penn hit a home run decades ago with this reel. Unfortunately I don't have the photos to upload on this device, maybe I can upload next week when I get home. Sincerely, Dave LaPorte

Rated 5 out of 5 by Phil 44 from So glad this is back in production! First purchased a 706Z in the late '70s and used it for twenty years. Used it for snook fishing in south farina and surf and pier in the Daytona to Cocoa area. It never let me down and the largest fish caught on it was a young grey nurse shark weighing 175 lbs on 20 lb Strength with 80 lb wire leader. This was caught from a boat just inside the Port Orange inlet in 1988. The 706Z handled this chore as easy as it as it would a 10 lb snook.

Rated 5 out of 5 by George Padilla from Made to last Penn z series are made to last, I recently caught a world record Florida pompano 20 pound line weight class on my oldest penn reel. It's good to know that penn reels hold up over time, cause you never know if the next cast will be a world record fish. Thanks penn for building a great reels.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Left Coast Transplant from Three Generations Of Reliability So glad Penn reintroduced this series because of my personal experience. When my Dad retired, his company gave him a beautiful Penn rod and reel surf casting set because my Dad announced he was moving to Florida. I was envious. I know of Penn's reputation but I didn't think I could afford the "luxury" of such a fine reel. A few years later, I moved to Florida, too. My Dad had only used the rig about 3 or 4 times but he didn't take care of it. When my Dad offered to give me the set, I jumped for joy! I have always loved Penn products for their reputation for quality. That was in 1982. I cleaned the reel and took it out right away. It ran like a top! I caught redfish, trout, snook, sea bass and ungodly amounts of sailcats. I hate sailcats! I'd rinse the reel in fresh water after each trip but that's about all I did to maintain it. In 1986, my son was born. As he grew, he and I fished often and that rod and reel have seen many happy years of service. Of course, we've also bought many other Penn products since. Today, 34 years later, I am proud to say I still own that rod and reel - and it still functions flawlessly to this day. I've had it professionally serviced exactly one time in 1999! And that was only due to it being stored for many years in a hot garage. The reputation for quality Penn has earned isn't due to slick ads or marketing hyperbole, it's in the build quality, the design and attention to detail. I have 3 generations of fisherman and a lot of smiles to prove it.

I bought a penn 706z last year and it's one of the best purchases I've ever made for fishing, I've caught everything from redfish to Blackfin tuna and its held up to every challenge I've put it up to, it's never had a problem and is as perfect today just as it was when I pulled it out of the box... Overall one of penns best reels ever

Rated 5 out of 5 by Ricky Pnut from DECENT I have a 704z. These reels are built like tanks and can take some abuse. They arent a junk made in china rebranded shakespeare like the lower end penns. They are made in the usa the same as they were 30 years ago. Put one of the z series on a ugly stik tiger with some trilene xt mono and its the fishing gear equivalent of an ak47. Boat surf bay heavy freshwater bottom fishing throwing plugs you name it it will do it.
