Product Reviews

PENN® General Purpose Level Wind is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 36.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Proven Classics I have a 109. Three 209s. And two 309s. The109 is from the 1960s. All are at least 30 years old. I've caught 100s if not 1000s of fish with them all over the world. If I could wear them out, I'd try something new. Most are on their 3rd or 4th rod. As it is I'll leave them to my grand children.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Battle Proven Performers These simple strong 1940's reels are timeless proven performers for me and several fellow anglers. My brother used my 9m to catch over 100 sturgeon on the Columbia River out of Astoria ,Oregon. In August 2003 I recaught my friend's lost salmon .It had swam away dragging his chain stringer upstream. Two hours later my single hook on a ten foot leader hooked that stringer, and recaught that runaway fish! This was on the Rogue River at Galice,Oregon.Penn 9 M Fenwick rod Maxima 20 lb.mono.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Proven Reliability! I bought my original 209 and 309 about 40 years ago! Although I've added considerably more expensive reels to my arsenal since then, these are still my fallback reels. In fact, I use them regularly in both fresh and saltwater! These reels are indestructible and 100% reliable, 100% of the time. You can pay much, much more, but IMHO you won't find a better heavy-duty level-wind reel for the money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best for the $ I have had multiples of these reels and will almost certainly buy more, when I have the need. I have used them mostly for large freshwater fish, catfish to muskie to lake trout. They may not be the most prestigious of reels, but I don't buy reels to impress others, I get them to catch fish and look for the best value for the dollar and these reels are the best choice for that in my experience. I should mention that I did use these reels for commercial fishing as well, so they got some serious use!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best lasting reel in its class The Penn 9M reels i have been using have each caught over 1000 fish and are still as mechanically good as the day I bought them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great investment for the fishing dollar I've bought a PENN 209 level wind to add to the Penn bait casters and spinning reels. WHY?? I've had Penn's ever since I started fishing as a Kid now at close to 70 They stand out in performance and reliability to all other brands I've bought. A few years ago I sent a brand X in for rebuild as it had 20 seasons on it. The Company returned it and told me they have no parts or services for a bait caster that old. About the same time I sent two Penn's in a Long Beach and one other that I have forgotten the model of. they both came back quickly serviced with new drag washers and fully serviced, The newest one was 40 years old!!! My Penn 209 is meant to maintain with lube fittings, it comes new with a Penn tool for servicing, and a parts support of no other company I have found. The 209 works like a dream and I love it. Why would you waste your hard earned dollars buying anything else that will turn out to be disposable? The money I save buying Penn gives me the reward of more time and money to fish with.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tough and reliable!!! I bought my Penn 209 years ago and it has performed flawlessly. I use it to troll for striped and hybrid bass. This reel is about as rock solid as it gets. Believe me, I am rough on my equipment but my 209 just keeps chugging on. With minimal maintenance these reels will last for several generations. If you want a reel that will not quit and will not break the bank, the Penn 209 is a top contender.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Solid Reel Used the 209 for everything from pink salmon to halibut. They work well. I have a couple that are at least 40 years old and still going. Decent drag. Parts available if anything gets messed up.
