Rated 5 out of 5 by Fishingaddicted from Best value out there. I have the FT 40 and love it. From 60 pound amberjack to 8 foot sharks to big mangroves, this reel handles it all. The drag preforms great at both cranked down and light if you are using a light leader. Super smooth casting. Very fast retrieve (nice if you are fishing very deep water and or jigging). While it's built light, it's super solid and doesn't flex. I've beat the heck out of it and it still acts like it did when it was brand new. I love that it retrieves 40 inches of line per crank when I'm in 200 feet of water. Looking forward to trying out the new two speed fathom for digging big grouper off the wrecks.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Socal serfisher from Easy to cast. Well made and high quality. I bought my Penn Fathom FTH15 last year. I only use it for saltwater fishing here in Socal. It is an excellent, reliable reel. I use it with only two spring activated brake blocks popped out and can cast it over 100 yards with a 5 oz torpedo sinker and a piece of squid (15 lb.Test Big Game mono with a 50 lb.Test shock leader) on an 11 ft surf rod without a backlash. I am not an excellent caster but this reel is awesome for long casts. I use it on the beach and always get sand on / in it but I just give it a light freshwater rinse and it hasn't given me any problems nor has it gotten corroded. I've caught from mackerel to bat rays on it. Good all around conventional reel.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Mikesmith86 from Amazing reel I caught 120 lb tarpon with this reel on a lightweight penn torque jogging rod. I couldn't believe how strong it was. Caught multiple 50lb reds, huge amberjacks, reel is a tank.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Tom7 from All metal, star drag reel. I've been using the Penn Fathom 15 & 25 on my charter boat since early last season. They stand up well to the rigors of saltwater and have a lot of power in a compact little package. The Fathom 25 spooled with 50- pound braid bested my best striper last year of 48-pounds.

Rated 1 out of 5 by DJones from Anti-rev dog posts snapping; Poor customer service Purchased a Fathom 30 and loved it! Used it for bottom fishing 5 times in 1 year and 2 months and had no complaints. Last time out I hooked into a fish and heard a loud snap from inside the reel and the anti-reverse no longer worked. Once I got home I removed the side plate to find that both posts that the anti-reverse dogs sit on snapped from the frame!! Obviously a gross manufacturers defect I called Penn service to discuss my options for repair only to be told "sorry you are out of our 1 year warranty and there is no option other than you paying full price for the repair." Since I only had the reel for 1 year and 2 months I figured I could possibly get a discounted rate, considering its obvious this was a Penn issue. I explained that I am a loyal Penn user and fish with nothing else, and in return basically received a very poor (and rude) experience. Asked for a quote for the repair and it was going to be nearly half of what I paid for the reel! Ended up purchasing the parts myself and did the rebuild simply to save $80. I love Penn...but this might change things...

Rated 5 out of 5 by Fish Killer from Great reel. Fathom 12 Star Drag Really good reel. Casts great, smooth drag, and caught some nice fish on it. Got a nice 27-30 lb Yellowtail on it with no problems. If you are trying to take the reel out of gear under tension, "cock" the spool back or release tension on the reel to throw it out of gear.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Zman228 from Penn Fathom 25N Originally bought with Peen bluewater Carnage rod for Butterfly jigging however I quickly learned it can do so much more. I have used this set up not only for jigging but also have hauled many big grouper and snapper off the bottom in the Florida Keys. The only Knock against this set up is the rod. It splintered a little bit already at just over 1 year old (photo Attached). That being said the reel is bulletproof
