The Truth About Big Game Reels
When it comes to designing and building a reel to cope with the extreme pressures entailed when playing huge fish, it all boils down to quality and performance. This is no time to cut corners and try to save on production costs - like many of our competitors do. Only the best quality materials and components can be used to ensure that the reel performs as it was designed to.

It all begins with the frame and side plates. Penn International V-Series frames, side-plates and spools are precision machined from solid forgings of a high-strength, but lightweight aircraft grade aluminium alloy. No half graphite or plastic bridge covers, just high-strength alloys. Penn International have been referred to as the Gold Standard in big game reels and one aspect of this designation has been our traditional and rich-looking Gold Anodising.

Frames, side plates, and spools are carefully placed onto a conveyor after being hand-polished to a mirror-like finish, where they head down a one hundred yard long anodizing tank. At the end of their journey these components emerge bearing the rich gold colour that has been synonymous with Penn and with the finest quality reel on the market.

Internal components are crafted in an even more rigorous manner than the frames. Our gears begin their life on a Swiss-made ‘Gear Hobber’ where the stainless gear blanks are precision machined to tolerances so tight that our gears meet NASA-grade standards. As for the guts, compare the gears from a Penn International to any other Big Game reel on the market and you will find that Penn quality and durability simply outmatch the competition.
