Rated 1 out of 5 by AAgundes from Poor line guides These pole are horrible. Do not buy them. The Prevail has very inferior line guides.

Rated 5 out of 5 by mk2000 from Great Rod!! I bought this model rod about 2 years ago, and paired it with the Penn Battle II 6000, and it has been great! It casts far, holds up to fish of all kinds, and I only had to have one of the line guide rings replaced because I accidentally got it stuck in a tree, but that wasn't the rod's fault. I highly recommend this rod to anyone, as it is a great rod for fisherman, new or old.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Kurto from Punches above its weight I bought my first penn prevail, the 15-24kg overhead surf casting model nearly two years ago and it has done nothing but impress ever since. Casts big leads just as far as the $500+ custom rods my mates use and loads up really well on big fish, she has landed some big sharks and mackerel in her time and always comes back for more

Rated 5 out of 5 by Trainman327 from Great rod for a great price This rod is my first conventional surf rod. I have used bait casting setups in fresh water for decades and have been using spinning equipment in the surf since childhood. But I have not used them for long distance casting in the surf. Foolish on my part! The Penn Prevail 12’ Heavy Surf Casting Rod (PRESF2040C12) was a great first casting rod to cut my teeth on. I have it matched with a Penn Squall Penn Squall SQL15. I have now used it on several surf fishing trips and this rod does great. I was casting 5 oz. weights with large pieces of cut bait, maybe 7 to 8 oz. total weight with no trouble. I can now cast further than I was ever able to with spinning equipment. In fact I’m getting the entire 190 yards of 20 lb. test off the reel and will be switching to braid next season. I have caught only one fish large enough to feel the rod was challenged, a large sting ray, and it handled that fine. Only time will tell if it can handle the stress of heavier challenges but for now I am very pleased with this purchase.

Rated 3 out of 5 by aleksyr from Great Rod defected guides The rod itself is great. The guides.... in particjlar the second one down from the top cuts/frays my line. I think they machined the guide at to much of an angle during production. I did research and it looks like 1/7 have this problem. Good pole but beware of guides.

Rated 5 out of 5 by so ho from great rod can't beat the price very light easy to casts a mile. i have the 10ft paired with daiwa mag st for bay fishing. i'm impressed with how affordable this rod is. guides don't break for no reason. ceramic guides break easily when its not cared for bottom line.

Rated 3 out of 5 by robposse from Its OK - not terrible, but not great I have several Penn rods and others which I use for surf fishing - casting chunks of fish and spinning metal lures. This Prevail will do the job, but I was hoping that it was a little more flexible (more action) so that I can cast further into the ocean. I will probably need to invest in a more expensive model and/or Brand.

Rated 3 out of 5 by Robbie27311 from Not suited to heavy surf fishing This rod handled the heavy surf ok. But did not stand up under big hits and the conditions, combined. Would be good for spot or crooker. Not drum or sharks The rod broke and I upgraded to the Battalion.
