Rated 5 out of 5 by trav from I've used this level winder in both warm and cold salt water. I've used this in Alaska to hoist up two approximately 20lb halibut up about 15 feet onto a ship at the same time (i had multiple hooks on my leader). My buddy landed a 20lb Mahi Mahi in Hawaii with this same exact reel. I like that it has no line guide, i'm not a fan of a lot of moving parts for a reel. I know they call it the jig master, but man does it make a great trolling reel. I don't think your going to find a reel as inexpensive and reliable as this one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by DT from Texas from Strong, classic, reliable The first Jigmaster I used was in 1969. It still works, but belonged to my father, my brother has it now. When I had enough money I bought my own in 1974, I sold it to my brother in 1987 and he has it and it still works. My father gave me a 1999 model and I fish with it today. This reel is simple, strong, and reliable. I have used it for surf fishing, pier, and boat fishing. We've caught numerous shark, stingray, ling, redfish, drum, etc. This reel will do whatever you want it to. It only needs minimal care to last, literally generations. Every Jigmaster our family has bought since 1965 still works.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Uncle Tommy from I bought a "Jigmaster" on line from a private source. It was brand new in the box. Seems the gentleman received it for his birthday. Problem is he didn't fish. This is where my luck begins. I have 7 "Penn Internationals" 5 -30's and 2 -50's Love them! anyway back to the Jigmaster, I was able to purchase it from the person who doesn't fish at a bargain price. I came and was just as claimed, brand new and in the box. OMG, It is my favorite open face reel bar none. It is so smooth and fast. I can't wait to take it down to the Dry Tortuga's for opening grouper week. I know we will slay them with this reel, mounted on a "Penn Renegade" rod. One deadly combination>

Rated 5 out of 5 by Jason in Pensacola from A great do-anything-reel at a great price Outstanding reel. I own five of them. Simple, tough design makes it ideal for surf fishing. It laughs at sand and saltwater. Easiest and fastest cleaning reel I've ever owned, hands down. No bearings to ruin either. You can swap out spools in seconds. Packed to the bars, I've got 360 (yes, 360) yards of 40 (yes, 40) pound Trilene Big Game on each one. Plenty of line for everything - fishing from the pier, bridge, kayak, boat, and surf. I routinely shark fish from the beach with short drops between the 1st and 2nd bars. Excellent for sharks up to 6-8 feet, which constitutes the majority of sharks you're likely to catch on short to medium drops here in Pensacola. Longer drops and/or bigger sharks and you'd be in trouble, no doubt. But if you fish it smartly within its limits you can land almost anything. Have tested the drag on all my jigmasters with a digital scale. Penn claims 15# drag with standard HT100 washers. I've averaged (drag locked down) readings of around 13# full spool, 25# half spool, and around 38# empty spool at which the 40# Trilene Big Game usually snaps and ends the test. I imagine It would probably max-out a little over 40# empty spool if I had heavier line on it. Word of caution to kayak anglers: anything over 5 to 6# of drag and you'll be towed along in the water for a ride until you either reduce drag or the fish/shark tires!

Rated 5 out of 5 by Tom7 from A Classic reel. Jigmsster reels have been made by Penn for decades. The reels are still tough as nails and will take a licking from saltwater game fish and continue to work flawlessly. I run a charter boat business and for the money these reels are excellent choices for my customers and their various angling skills.

Rated 4 out of 5 by BigDiesel from Great starter reel, strong drag Have had my 500L for over 20 years and I can say that it is still a standout choice for fish in the 20 to 40 pound class. I fish out of San Diego and further south, the Jigmaster has stood the test of time. Have changed the drags twice and I can say that it is reliable and strong. All of the rental rods from the landings have Jigmasters and the anglers catch as much fish as the folks using more expensive gear. Don't let your ego allow you to pass up a classic.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Trooper from Oldie but goodie I bought this reel 40 odd years ago to use around the Elizabeth Islands for striped bass . It's been my go to reel ever since . It's been used and abused plenty over the years ,even left outdoors in the sun and rain . Replacing the drag washers it becomes my new reel once again .The removable side plate allows me to change form mono to wire or braid . Asked if I have the same old reel I smile and say "YUP"

Rated 5 out of 5 by Yellowtail catcher from Best all around reel I currently have 2 of these beauties. The first one I received more than 30 years ago and still use it. The second one is now 10 years old. They both work extremely well and they need very little maintenance. These reels will stand up to the toughest 20 Lb fish and at the same time will allow you to fish 1 to 2 Lb fish with great finesse. Nearly every seasoned saltwater fisherman that I know has one of these reels and none of them can think of a short coming.
